“Part of our responsibility today ties us back to our cultural history that gives us responsibility for a place. And so while Kaʻululaʻau helped to bring us to the island of Lānaʻi, we need to mālama our place to ensure that we can continue to be on Lānaʻi.”

KOLOMONA “SOL” KAHOʻOHALAHALA

As Mānaiakalani crosses the ‘Auʻau Channel, Uncle Kolomona “Sol” Kahoʻohalahala recounts the story of Kaʻululaʻau, the mischievous boy who was banished to the island of Lānaʻi. Through his deeds, he rids the island of its resident ghosts, making it safe to inhabit. The people of Lānaʻi today are connected to Kaʻululaʻau as they farm the land and fish from the sea; some are his literal descendants. All who make Hawaiʻi their home are a part of this genealogy in caring for the land and ensuring its prosperity for generations to come.
