“You’re not planting just a koa tree, you’re planting a canoe for a future generation.”

PŌMAIKAʻI KANIAUPIO-CROZIER

For Pōmaikaʻi Kaniaupio-Crozier, the arrival of Mānaiakalani into Honolua Bay is reminiscent of an experience only three years prior when Hōkūleʻa anchored in the bay after completing the Mālama Honua worldwide voyage. Here in this place, the connection between ocean and land is apparent. Looking up from the bay is Wao Kele o Honolua, the Puʻu Kukui Watershed, the state’s largest private nature preserve. Through intensive restoration efforts, native plants like koa and ‘aʻalii are grounding their roots once again. Mānaiakalani ventures across the Pailolo Channel to Moloka’i, bridging the islands and reminding us that we are one ocean, one people.
