In preparation for Mānaiakalani’s departure, the crew look to cultural rituals which will set the foundation for the entire voyage. Cultural practitioner Kaumakaiwa Kanakaʻole explains the symbiotic relationship between the environment and man which is demonstrated in all Hawaiian oral traditions. The journey of Mānaiakalani is not just an educational endeavor, but a spiritual one. With the winds, animals, and gods on their side, Mānaiakalani sets sail for Maui.
