Hawaiian songs and chants were preserved orally through the generations before a writing system was established. As astute observers of their environment, many songs were written about the places of Hawaiʻi and the special characteristics within them like the winds, the rains, and moʻolelo. Nā Hōkō Hanohano Award winners, Nā Wai ‘Ehā, tell us about their creative process and the importance of preserving our places as a means of connecting to the past.
