For generations kalo has played an integral role in sustaining Native Hawaiians both physically and spiritually. Colonization and forced assimilation significantly reduced the production and proliferation of kalo, and therefore poi, throughout Hawaiʻi. The female leadership cohort of Nā Wahine ‘Ahumanu of Kamehameha Schools Maui in collaboration with local kalo farmers aims to make this staple food easily accessible. By utilizing modern technology, they were able to churn out 150 pounds of poi and donate it to three different preschools serving Hawaiian keiki across Maui.
