UHMC Malo Project

BTS/Ceremony Video

Hume A Pa’a

“To bind until firm, solid, tight.”
Kumu Lisa Schattenburg-Raymond and her Ma’awe: Hawaiian Fiber Arts class at UHMC took on the challenge of creating wearable Kapa – particularly Malo. They harvested, pounded, dyed, and painted the wauke into soft wearable malos that were gifted to Hawaiian practitioners here on Maui. They hope to receive feedback from these practitioners on how they wear to further their research and improve techniques. The presentation was called Hume A Pa’a, “To bind until firm, solid, tight.”

Inspiration

In this video, we hear the inspiration & meaning behind each piece. Each student honored their practitioner in every decision from dye color to pattern design used to create their malo. It’s amazing to see people who are interested in, value, & respect our Hawaiian traditions & practitioners.
