Hālau Nā Lei Kaumaka O Uka
Over 20 beautiful wahine competed in the Merrie Monarch 2018 festival. Throughout the weekend, I witnessed each and everyone of them prepare mentally, physically, and spiritually. It was obvious how much this meant to them – not just the competition, but the entire experience. Everything they did – every chant, every movement – was done with intent and a deep spiritual connection. Here’s a look into what was a particularly memorable year for these wahine!
This wasn’t only about the hālau’s journey through the competition; what took it deeper was each dancer’s individual experience. After seeing how each dancer processed, absorbed, and connected to the entire experience, I wanted to highlight each individual who was a part of this year’s competition – especially since they did so well. Here’s a video introducing the wahine of Hālau Nā Lei Kaumaka O Uka.
What an exciting weekend! Aside from the actual performances, I was moved to witness ceremonies, practices, and preparations. Hereʻs a look into the entire weekend, from preparation to their homecoming.
Here’s a video of the hālau at Halemaʻumaʻu crater. Wahine performed ceremony, chant, and dance honoring Pele. What isn’t captured in this video is the crater wall collapsing just 15mins after the hālau left!
