On August 10, 2019 thousands gathered on Maui in kapu aloha to protect Mauna Kea & stop further desecration of our sacred lands. Majority of Hawaiians & our supporters oppose the construction of TMT (Thirty Meter Telescope) on Mauna Kea. While this is happening on the Big Island, the frustrations & pains are felt throughout the islands & worldwide. This video features our Maui community taking a stand.

TMT = Thirty Meter Telescope
SUPPORTERS: University of Hawaiʻi, China, Canada, India, Japan
SIZE: 2nd largest telescope, 18-stories, 5-acres
COST: $1.4 Billion
SECONDARY LOCATION: Canary Islands
WHAT IS MAUNA KEA
LOCATED = Mountain on Hawaiʻi Island (Big Island)
CEDED LAND belonging to the Hawaiian Kingdom (pre-statehood), which was illegally taken & is now held by the state
A RELIGIOUS SITE for ceremonies, prayer, offerings
THE ORIGIN of the Hawaiian islands, an ancestor
HAR 13-5-30: Laws protecting conservation areas
THE IMPACT
CONSTRUCTION involves digging 5-stories deep into the mountain, permanently damaging natural resources & affecting our watershed
DISTURBS indigenous plant & animal habitats
5K GALLONS of hazardous chemicals will be held underground
WHAT’S HAPPENING
SINCE 1960’S Native Hawaiians have protested against telescope construction on Mauna Kea
DESPITE PROTESTS 13 telescopes have been built on the summit, some no longer in use that have yet to be removed
WORLDWIDE outpour of opposition against TMT
THOUSANDS of kiaʻi (protectors) gather peacefully at Mauna Kea’s base, exercising kapu aloha (reacting with kindness, love, & empathy)
REMAINING LAND for cultural practitioners will be desecrated & made private
IN RESPONSE TO PEACEFUL PROTESTS, Hawaiʻi’s Governor:
– sent armed forces from neighboring islands
– arrested 35 kupuna (elders)
– declared a “State of Emergency”
– fabricated untrue image of our kiaʻi’s efforts
– called upon the National Guard
