I love this project so much because not only is this mele about our beautiful ʻāina, but it honors the aloha ʻāina efforts within our community! I hope hope hope more mele like this are written because the people & their efforts to protect are just as beautiful.
This mele was written to celebrate & honor the work Nā Pāpaʻi Wawae ʻUlaʻula & local West Maui families who protect & preserve shoreline access within the moku of Kāʻanapali. It is because of their work, hotels & condos can not kick us off beaches fronting their properties, access paths must be maintained, & we can enjoy traditional practices & natural resources.
This mele is featured on the second Lei Nāhonoapiʻilani album, Nā Mele Hou – a collection of musical collaborations celebrating West Maui. Sheet music for this song is included in the book, Lei Nāhonoapi‘ilani.
The overall concept was to feature involved individuals & their families accessing shorelines & enjoying activities at a location highlighted in each verse.
Mahalo to everyone for being a part of this video & for all your good work!
Kai Nishiki, Archie Kalepa, Fujiwaras, Felimon Sadang, Kanamu Balinbin, & Tamara Paltin + all your ʻohana!
